Erasers in motor mounts!

I heard that you can use erasers in your motor mounts as an alternative to polyurethaning them. It sounds like it could work by shoving them into the spaces. Any one else have any opinions on this? I'm willing to try this if someone tells me how exactly to take the mounts off

The rubber hose technique also works... 3 years and counting... They just wedge in there...

The easiest way to make engine mounts stiff take them off and fill them with window sealer (this black nasty ****). Makes them alot better.

Yea but you have to wait for them to dry.

BTW, anyone know how to take mounts off?

1. support engine (although I've done it without supporting the engine)
2. remove bolts

Ok, well I purchased a 6 pack of erasers today. Heres the story, basically I WD-40'd and wedged them into the mounts. I did just the tranny and the front mount. 3 in the tranny and 2 in the front. I did not take the mount off because there was enough clearance for the erasers to slip into.

My Impression: WOW! It is a new car, seriously...it makes that big of a difference and thats only with 2 mounts done. I'm still gunna to the rear and side tommorow. This was VERY simple because all I had to do was lub them up and slip them in the holes. No removal necessary

Yeah, I'm curious also. Does it make that transmission shifts seem smoother?

LOL, that is funny as hell although amazing at the same time. If the erasers make that big of a difference that would be the best mod for the money.

I cant believe im hearing this cause my number one peeve about the max was clutch chatter and i was actually thinking about getting new mounts and filling them with polyurethane. Too bad i have to sell the max (stupid insurance)

I have a 5 speed. My results are that there is a lot less play in the tranny and engine. It's still a little rougher than normal but with only 2 mounts done it made a big difference. I think the one that makes the biggest difference is the rear mount which I will do tommorow. I'm telling you, it may sound stupid or cheap but it works, and I didn't even have to take the mounts out

Read my posts, I said all I did was buy a multipack of erasers, sprayed them with WD-40 and sliped them in the visible opening on the mounts. Nothing has to be removed. With the WD-40 they just slide right in through the openings. For the front and rear, you have to slide them in diagnally but the tranny theres nothing blocking the hole so they slide in normally. I used 3 perpendicular (meaning directly into) on the tranny, and 2 parallel (meaning sideways) in the front. Take a look at your mounts and youll see what I mean

Sounds great, I will definatly try it, but I only have one possible problem with the idea.....Erasers are meant to erode with friction, so after time they will rock around, weardown and fall out....Its just a guess but for only a small price its worth trying.

OMG, you all can't be serious. We're talking about $10-$15 worth of 3M window sealer to do this right or a bit more if you're going to try the polyurethane. Why not just do it once and do it right? You can get all 4 mounts out in well under an hour. Fill them up and put them in the next morning before taking off again.

Man you are my hero. I just got home from driving around with my new eraser mounts. The feel is so much different. Not that much rocking anymore in first. I LOVE YOU lol. Saved me a few hundred dollars on mounts and labor. Eventually I'mma have to change the mounts though but for in the mean time this is good enough for me.

Has anyone thought about the durability issues of erasers? How long do you think that they're going to stand up to the rocking motion of the motor before they start disintegrating? People tear through factory motor mounts and they're designed for this usage, how long are cheap erasers going to last? And the WD-40 sprayed on there probably isn't helping the life of the eraser either. That plus the heat under the engine and a multitude of other things. If this works for more than 2 weeks before you start spewing chunks of eraser from the mounts, I'll be really surprised.

You have to go under the car anyways, like joaquink said, why not just spend the extra time and a few bucks and do it right.

Honestly...I bought a 6pack of erasers for $2.00. What am i losing? Even if they don't last too long, who cares? Ill just buy new ones and shove those in. I think it will last because with the eraser shoved in, theres gunna be no rubbing, just squeezing. It's not too different from polyurethaning them and is way cheaper. I think everyone shoulf give this a try, anyone can do it and all you have to buy is erasers.

Don't knock it till you try it... you may be surprised!

Bro after you put them in the only way to go is up. If your motor mounts are that bad that you consider sticking pink erasers in them then you'll be happy with the results. I have a 5 speed. I only have three mounts so I dont need to get under the car. I just got under the hood, sprayed a whole bunch of wd40 and just started shoving the little ****s in. I prob should have also squirted some silicone in there too. I think that would make the erasers more durable and less prone to wear. I think this is a great mod for the buck if not the best lolol

If you squeeze erasers enough, they will still fail and lose elasticity. My only point is that even at $2.00 each time, that will quickly add up to the $10 or so you'd spend on polyurethane and you'd only have to do that once so you wouldn't be crawling under your car constantly.

I got a real good deal on some PR motor mounts. But I'd definitely like to see how long this works for.

I see what you saying, but that also applies to polyurethane somewhat...they can lose elasticity also and start to weaken and possibly crack. This is just to create temporary relief of engine flop. It's not going to last forever but it'll do for now.

About removal: To remove them, just squirt a little WD-40 in the motor mount, and use a wire hanger to fish out the eraser.

I just took this from my program, its pretty decent about showing you where to look. Cardomain made picture a lot smaller when I uploaded it but you get the idea.
