what kind of a racing steering wheel should I get?

What brand is the most reliable? What do I need for the entire installation of an aftermarket steering wheel? I don't like the stock steering wheel because it's too big. I was looking online and I found Sparco and Momo steering wheels, but they did not include anything else. I'm quessing that you need to buy an adapter of some kind, but I'm not exactly sure. Did anyone replace the steering wheel before? Please let me know the procedure and the tools needed. Can I do this myself or should I have a mechanic do it for me? How long will it take to install? Please help me out.

You should have a mechanic do it because it is really dangerous. The airbag could deploy and all that fun stuff. Btw, the maxima steering wheel looks good why do yo u want to change it?

No, you have to take the bag out.

Momo or sparco are nice steering wheels. You woul need a special Torx bit to take out the air bag bolts. I belive that snap-on has that special bit.

Please do not take out the safety of your air bag for a 5lb savings and a small change in steering responsiveness. Its not fair to the rest of us when you crash and die because you chose to not use your airbag.

how does it concern you? it is his choice and he will be responsible for the consequences, not us.

air bags dont deploy half of the times anyway because they can actually hurt you more than if they didn't. if he always buckles up, he should be straight...

so it is worth it?

so the aftermarket steering wheel sounds like a pain in the *** to install. I find the stock steering wheel to be very huge!!! I like the 300ZX steering wheel. I wonder if it will bolt up to a Maxima.. Anyone know? That way, I can keep the airbag and everything will be cool..

AIT, wtf do you need racing steering wheel for? you are just going to hit your face on when you get into the accident and it will hurt 10 times more then the stock one even if your airbag doesn't deploy. Second of all if you never get into the accident you will surely get pulled over one of these days and cop either will write you a ticket for the gay steering wheel or just be a ****en *** to you for having that pc of ****.

because the steering wheel is big

I can't stand the BIG steering wheel. it feels like an Truck steering wheel... that's all I'm saying.. Not concerned about tickets or safety because I'm a safe driver.. translation: don't do anything stupid like a little teanager would.. like street racing in traffic...

you are supposed to remove the battery leads, and wait at LEAST 15 mins before beginning to remove airbag harnesses. the bit that is required to remove the airbag is a torx t-50 TAMPER PROOF bit. they will most likely NOT have a tamper proof in a size 50 at the local hardware store, however i did hear Kragans carries a set by powerbuilt for 6 bucks. i had to order my set, total price of around 15 bucks shipped from kragans site. most people would recommend that you unplug the battery lead the night before you plan to work on the airbag, and carefully handle the pad without dropping it or jarring it anywhere to protect from unexpected deployment (which may/may not happen...nobody really knows).

Back when I worked as an EMT I had to transport a man that died in a car accident because he had an aftermarket steering and no airbag. The impact stopped his heart instantly. Scary stuff. I wont steer clear of the aftermarket. Isnt it illegal?

You dont have to be the one that is driving unsafe to get in a car accident. You could get rear ended, hit from the front, side, etc. You should be concerned with your safety. Its dumb to think you are safe and untouchable because you are a good driver. I have seen many accidents...

True, but (and this is my EMT experience talking) it is better to keep your airbag in any case. Its his decition though. Good luck.
