Why??. I just put in some NKG plugs and the box said to gap them. most were dead on, one was way off.

I doubt you used NKG plugs, they were probally NGK
If i remember correctly the part number for the platinum plaugs is PK5rg-11, or something like that. Well, i remeber hearing that the -11 part refered to the gap. which is why the copper plugs have to be gapped, because they come pre-gapped for another car.
Just a heads up: even though you might not HAVE to gap a plug, you should still always double-check the gap. You never know if the plugs were banged around or anything.
