Groaning During Wheel Turn

Greetings,

Recently, with the introduction of the cold weather in NJ, my 95 SE started growning when I turn the steering wheel right after starting the car. If I let the car warm up for a minute or so, it goes away. I also notice the power steering sometimes goes in and out when the car is cold (within this first minute of starting the car). The belts are good and tightened correctly and the fluid is fine. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Scott

No it's not a cv boot, it your power steering. Get it flushed and refilled also check for leaks. Powersteering pump may be fu{ked also.

have you tried turning the wheel wtih the car in park/not moving? If its hard *** hell to turn and moves jerky, try checking the PS belt and the pump. If not, then i'm not sure.

Got exactly the same problem. Have new axles and flushed the system yesterday. Today it's still wa there when started the car and was driving out of the driveway. Maybe have to give it a few days to settle.
Thanks guys for replying!

Anybody else any thoughts?

Well my friends explorer had a terrible leak on his PS. And it makes the noise now. But he had that problem for over a year now, and put **** load of miles on it so I guess as long as it doesn't turn bad you are fine. But my guess is your ps is starting to mess up.

Domestic cars are built to run with problems, LOL. Until the **** hits the fan and everything goes at once.

Thanks for the replies. Let me give more info. Both axle's have been replaced within the past two years. The belts are one year old and I had the power steering fluid/system flushed earlier this year. Also, this problem began at the end of the last winter season, however once the warm weather came, it went away. Now the cold weather is back, it has also returned.

Any other thoughts,
Thanks,
Scott

If you have hard steering when cold, and any noise when turning the wheel with the car stationary, your steering rack is probably going. As they wear out, metal filings clog the innards, and the pump is not able to easily overcome the resistance.. A flush might work, but sometimes leaks can result afterwards... Check for any leakage around the boots on the steering rack, the fluid level, etc...
