CV Drive Shaft

CV Drive Shaft

Hey guys, i took my car to Merlin Muffler and they told me my CV Shaft on the right was torn and needed to be replaced. When they showed it to me grease was exposed and leaking out some. They told me if i continued driving without getting it fixed i will eventually hear some clicking sounds when i make left or right turns which is bad. They are charging me $249.95 for the repair. Is this a good deal or should i shop around for a better price. What do you guys think? Any suggestions would be great.

I think they just need to replace the boot (cover). That means they don't have to replace the axle/joint itself. $250 sounds awfully high just to replace the boot. I had both AXLES replaced (with remanufactured axles) for around $300. I'd shop around; even if they were going to replace the entire axle, 250 is too high.

yes you definately need to shop around more, i had the same problem about 2 weeks ago, i bought a CV boot from advance auto parts for 10.88 and took it to the mechanic down the road where he put the new one on for 65$.

get a new axle. The dirt that got in due to a torn boot will mess the axle up sooner or later.

My right boot is also ripped. I was quoted $300 to replace the axle which is bs. I'll do a little shopping around myself, most likely with smaller independent shops.

actually depending on the price of the shaft, 250-300 isn't that bad. remans here seem to cost about 120 so i can see them charging 120 for labor. it does take an hour or so.
but i would not get just the boot. unless you know how long your boot was torn, you dont know how much damage is already done. if rocks got in and damaged your bearings, you'll have to do it all over again very soon. spend the extra money and get a whole (half) shaft.
