98 auto shift problem

98 auto shift problem
My sister just got a 98 automatic gxe and just yesterday the car started shifting hard from gear to gear. 1st to 2nd is the worst. Also the check engine light turned on as soon as this started. Any ideas? Btw I would use the search button, but I am not allowed

check the codes it is giving...a how to is on the main 4th gen page...that's a start.
