Tranny not downshifting

I am having problems with my tranny(auto) kicking down when it needs to. I can some times come to a complete stop and it will be in 2nd gear. When I go,it will creep for a second and then finally kick down to 1st. Sometimes that isn't very safe when crossing in an intersection. Also, when I am cruising I will get on it and it won't downshift at all. I will accelerate but it will stay in 4th gear.

Is this something I can fix myself or should a mechanic do it?

i would say solenoids too. I just had mine replaced when I had my VB done. when i got my car back, it was acting very similar to that. ended up being a defective solenoid. good luck.

What exactly do solenoids do. How many of them are there and is it an expensive fix?

I believe there are three. Maximum tuning charged me $125 for new ones when he did my VB mod. No labor charge because he had to pull them out anyway to do the valvebody. I believe it is recommended to replace the solenoids at 80k, so if you have more than that one could have gone bad.

I had the same thing happening for a while and I let it go for a week or so before i had it checked. It turns out that when I took it to a local tranny shop, I broke some bands, and the tranny wasnt getting cooled properly.
