CEL turned off on it own

I got a CEL about a month ago. I reset it and after 500 miles it came back on. After another 500 it just tuned off. It was for a downstream O2 sensor. Is this normal? Does it just decide to turn off one day?

It could be that the problem was fixed, and the computer eventually figured that out and shut off the light, or it could be that the bulb burned out. My guess is probably #2 since it's an o2 sensor yer talking about. Either way, you should probably get it checked out by a shop.

had the EXACT same problem. It was a toasted O2 sensor. I have a 99, BTW. The dealer replaced it, free. Under no obligation. I love State Line

i read here once that after a certain amount of cold starts the ecu automatically resets itself and starts to recycle...then recognizes the problem again and throws a CEL...mine does the same thing and i have a faulty o2 i STILL need to replace

If the bulb goes on when you turn the key to "ON" but without starting the engine, ( the key position that illuminates most of the warning lamps for check), then that eliminates #2 above.
