Alternator just went... couple questions

1) the alternator is gone, and the car barely turns over. i was getting unusual whining today that didnt occur previously, so im guessing that it was definately the alternator that took a ****, right?

2) As i said the car barely turns over, so is it safe to jump it and then drive it to the dealer to get the alternator replaced?

1)probably alternator...do you have dimming lights and such?>

2)yeah its safe to do so, as long as you have a good battery and the dealer is not far.

your car is a a 97 so there is a good chance your alternator is under recall and can get replaced for free...Mine did!
Call your dealer and check.

i've driven that far before on the freeway with no power. Belt for alt was gone and batt didn't even have enough juice to start the car without a jump. It was scary though, get up to about 60mph and then the car would shudder like the spark plugs didn't have enough power to keep the engine running. Same would happen if I gave it to much gas. Worse part about it was it was at night. Headlights were no help at all so I just drove with them off praying not to get pulled over. All the warning lights were on, engine, brakes, batt, everything. So yeah you can make it that far, just don't push it.

A Nissan dealer will rape you ($$$$$) for a new alternator if it's not covered under warranty. Call 1st with your VIN# handy to find out if it's covered under the recall before you get it there. . .
