Cold Starting Difficulties
Cold Starting Difficulties
This is applicable to my mother's 1996 Nissan Maxima GLE with 90k miles; all maintenance upto date. When the temperature is approx. 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below, starting the vehicle in the mornings or after a long period, vehicle will not start unless I give it some gas for about 10 seconds at 2K Rpms steady. Problem has been apparent for some time, about 2 years. What do you think is the problem (i.e.ignition coils)?

Could be fuel system is dirty. That happend to our 95 about the same mileage. Go to a local auto part store and buy a can of BG44k fuel system cleaner. Put it in on an empty tank, fill your tank to best octane you can get, and then drive. It takes about 2 tanks for it to fully get done, but it makes a good improvement. You also might want to try cleaning your throttle body (TB), or, get it in for its 90k tuneup, but if you try the BG44k be sure to tell them you ran it, beacuse you should only do it like every 30k or so.
Hope this helps ya.

same problem on my 96 gle. just replaced the crankshaft position sensor (ref) as indicated by the CEL, and same problem. I changed the coolant temperature sensor also (it seemed to help). still though, rarely does it start on first crank, sometimes it seems like it chokes once or twice but usually starts on like 5-6 cranks. let me know if you figure out your problem
Wil Do. I will try the BG44K and clean TB.
