HELP! New Tranny-vs-New Neon HELP!
OK I plan on moving into the Dallas area, Lewisville to be exact, I'm plan on attending the University of North Texas. Now here is my dilema. My car has 149,994 miles on it. I love my Max to death, god forbid I lose it. But a drive form Brownsville to Dallas will put some serious miles on my car. I have a few choices, buy a 2001-2003 Neon for around $9000 with a loan and selling my Max or something I've thought about, puttin a new tranny in my car and would a 2000-2002 tranny fit and work the same way? How much would I be looking at for a new tranny and installation? I know the 2000 and up trannies are not peg-legged like us 4th gens.
How much would it cost?
Where do I find one? (Don't wnat a used one)
Would it be like driving a new car?
What about the existing miles on my car?
Would it prolong the life of my car?
Should my performance increase?
Is it a direct replacement?
Thanks everyone

2000-2001 tranny will fit. Might have to change one of the axles. Rem,anufactored transmission will be around $1000 and install around $500. Neon will not last the miles you put on the car. I say do a full tune up on the max and new tranny.

It's always cheaper to keep the car you already own.
Your mileage isnt that high. Personally, I'm still running hard at 182,000.
If you're sure you need a new tranny, that should cost less than $2000, dpending on how much of the labor you do yourself.

when my trans blew out in my 90se max i paid $2200. i got a rebuilt trans and a new clutch. I wouldnt recommend going to cottman or aamco. I also tried purchasing a new transmission from the nissan dealership and it was going to cost me close to $3000 so i did not go that route i prolly should have.
I wouldnt buy a neon. I knew someone who had one and it was a complete roach from day one. Plus they are trash after like 2 years at least the max will have some resale value. just my $0.02

i wouldn't replace it untill its broken what if it lasts 30k more? as long as it doens't go on your ride down your fine there are transmission shops everywhere...just set aside cash because you know you need to(sounds like you already have)...a new tranny will not make your car feel like a new car, you still have your old engine, your interior will be just as noisy as before, and it will still not smell new....the shifts should feel 'close' to a new car though =] do you have an automatic?

There are some pretty good buys on used cars in the Dallas area. Definitely low mile maximas, camrys and ES 300s. Since you are a college kid, I'd keep the maxima for now. If the tranny blows, then you can weigh your options. For now, enjoy it. And like I said, check cars.com and there are usually some decent low mileage decent priced cars to find. Plus Lewisville is pretty nice area, so if the car does break down, hopefully it will be in a good part of town. Plus, if you have a Cell phone, you can always call for a taxi.

Answer #2 = Nissan only place for new stuff, actually refurbished, but any place you look, Amco etc, all general same price as discussed above.
Answer #3 = No. Maybe shift smoother, but that's about it.
Answer #4 = Need more info.
Answer #5 = Depends on the condition of your car as a whole, and if the tranny was in fact the weak link, but yes, possibly.
Answer #6 = Again, depends on how bad your current tranny's condition is, if very bad and sluggish, then yes, a new one would outperforma the old on, cripser shifts etc.
Answer #7 = Truthfully, I thought the 4th gen autos, at least 95/96 were made better than the 2k/2k1, and the shift quicker, at least the ones that I;ve been in. But it is a direct replacement.
