Any hacked airbox experiences?

I'm wondering who out there has hacked their airbox (drilling holes in the bottom of the air box), and what the result was. Also, what size holes did you cut in it?

Look for MaxN00b, or DaveB's post. They have dones extensive testing with these types of set up's.

I noticed here in these instructions

it says to remove the 2 resonators after you cut the air box. What's the purpose of that?

I did mine after I installed a Frankencar hybrid intake. I prefer the hacked airbox, its quieter and seems to be the same gains but better low end...not sure though, it might just be in my head. I still have the stock scoop and the resonators connected.

I hacked mine cause did not wanna spend money on intakes while getting same lousy hp gains. Love the sound when going WOT. I also have B-pipe and muffler.
Removed resonators as well, but kept the scoop.

what does removing the resonators do? Make it louder?

Yep, plus removing lower resonator gives access to some more air

Don't bother with it. Between a hybrid, just a cone, hacked box, and stock box with mid-pipe, the stock box with midpipe wins hands down. I don't have the snorkle or a any of the tubing put on so it still might be a bit weaker than the stock intake. It still gives off a subtle growl and pull like a mother. For city driving the stock intake is the best. Making a custom air-box as I type.

removing resonator makes for better flow.. think about it.. if you have the resonator there, some air has to flow in that direction to fill it up.. air that doesnt flow in 1 stright direciton causes some turbulence. this is my theory anyway. thanks for using my write up guys..its yoru decision to remove resonators or not.. resonators are also there to make the intake quieter system. so removing them in theory gives you more growl at WOT.

my friend has a wrx.. all the did was remove the stock resonator from under teh fender, added
k&n .. and it soudns alot better.. no hole hacking.

Well actually, the resonators are there more for resonance than anything else.

^^Exactly. The resonator acts as an air buffer and this might actually aid in cylinder filling at every RPM.
