i was reading the VQpower write up. They said that "painting" masking tape is to be used. Can i just use pain ol' masking tape? Is there a difference?

No difference, just as long as it keeps paint from getting on the inner reflection housing(chrome).

I think there is a difference..The painting tape will have less sticky stuff so when u peel it off, you wont bring anythign along with it..I used regular tape on my parking lights and when i peeled off the tape, some chrome peeled off too

Before I got finished painting them. I put them in the oven again to soften up the glue. It's easier for you to push them together. I also used silicone glue to make sure that no water would get in. You don't really want condensation getting in. Then you gotta start all over again...

Since I also just finished my AE headlights I really recommend not to use reagular masking tape. That sticky part stays on the light plus I noticed that when i ripped of the tape some of the reflective stuff came off. Should of used the painter's masking tape. AAAAHHHHGGGGGG!!!!!

Question for those that did the AE mod: Did you guys notice the beam pattern of each headlight narrowed? Observing the pictures, you guys are painting the sides of the reflectors. Anyone made some beam comparisons between AE'd out and non-AE'd out headlights? Just curious.

i think there is a slight difference in beam pattern cuz mine is a little bit narrower. its more focused instead of spread out.

There is a difference, masking tape is more permeable to paint and will most likely seep through. Also, the glue used in painter's tape is different so there is no residue after it is removed, hence the fact you use masking tape for one purpose, and painter's tape when you are painting anything.

Isn't that ring for the purpose of directing light from the bulb back towards the center (flat) part of the reflector then dispurses out to the rest of the reflector: up/down, left/right? Are you referring to the brightness of the bulb from outside your car looking at the headlights or from inside the driver side looking out into the road ahead?

Very interesting...why would they put something there that would reduce bulb output, especially from 9004? If anything they should have tried to enhance its output for better road visibility. I might just do this mod. That ring screws in correct?

The black is not nearly as black as it appears in the pics. I took this in my Garage because my car is now stored and wont be outside for another couple months.

its called the ae mod so it looks like the ae car. black housing. not white, not red, not beige. black. plus if it was red housing, thatd look funky and a white housing wouldnt look to good either. it would be different, but not look good. black housing looks cooler anyways. its much more noticeable too.
