Greetings:
After reading an article in Motor Trend, I was wondering what the board's opinion on fuel injection, etc. cleaner is. Should we periodically use something like STP to clean deposits or is using a quality premium octane gasoline good enough? I have always used Shell 93.
I was told my my Nissan mechanic that he does not recommend fuel injection cleaner since he claims it will cause the fuel injectors to run hot enough to damage them. On the other hand, the other day I saw a bottle of Nissan "top engine cleaner" in the display case at the parts counter.
Thanks

It's not recommended to use these products on a preventive basis. The potential for harm is not that the injectors "run hot", it is the risk that solvents powerful enough to clean injectors are also powerful enough to erode the insulation from the injector coils. These electric coils are bathed in gasoline.

I've been running with Redline's Fuel System Cleaner for a couple of years now. I only add 1oz per tank of gas though - per Redline's instructions.

You might look at whether your dealer offers MotorVac cleaning services too. Couple of sources have been positive on doing that.
