Oil leak above sending unit ('96 I30)

My mechanic spotted an oil leak near the oil pressure sending unit, so he replaced it just in case (since it was easy and cheap).

Unfortunately, the leak is still there, and he says it's definitely not at the sending unit, but above it. He thinks that it's probably the timing chain cover gasket, and he says the book lists that as a 9-hour repair job--I guess there's a lot of stuff in the way! He's not positive though, and would hate to do something so major that might not solve the problem. (He is going to check with a fellow mechanic to see if it _really_ is a 9-hour job.)

Any chance that it might be something else? I just got this car (with 60K miles on it) and I'm not thrilled about having to do a $600-$700 repair job on it. My mechanic (who I trust) says _if_ it is the timing chain cover gasket, and if I don't get it replaced, it could blow and lose all the engine oil.

Any ideas?

u should also check the lower oil pan....if not then it's the timing chain cover...your mechanic is only charging u $600-700 to fix it? that is good price compare to if u take it to dealer it's like $1500-1700 job....
