new axles or replace outer cv???
The cv boot on the drivers side axle split open a few weeks ago and I am trying to decide the best way to proceed. The joint isn't making noise yet so I probably could just take ot off, clean it really well and repack the joint with a new boot, but for all that work, it might be easier to justt replace the whole axle with a rebuilt one. Does anyone know a good place to look for rebuilt axles, or just the cv joint? Would it be best to replace to joint or just do the boot? I've done cv's on a few other cars and I'm assuming that its just pressed onto the end and retained with a snap ring. I don't want to mess with the 2 piece boots since i have had bad luck with them and I want a long term solution. Thanks for you help.
PS... It's a 95 SE auto, 100k, if it matters

Go with a whole axle. They're like $65 or less at pep boys or autozone. They have lifetime warranty (keep yer receipt). I personally liked the one from autozone better. It came with a new 36mm nut. If you catch it early enough, and want to save the money...and don't mind spending time...just replace boot. Alot of us don't catch it in time....and are left wondering....should I replace axle or boot? When I discovered my boot was ripped...I just ran it until it started clicking, then replaced whole axle.

Save your money, buy a set of Beck Arnley boots that come with the right cinch straps and grease and be done with it. I, like yourself, have done boots on cv's many times in the past and just make sure that you specify 5 spd/Auto and abs/or not.
My opinion is that the original equipment is superior to almost anything you will find in a rebuilt joint so why not spend $30 for the boots total instead of $300. I think if you didn't have the time or want to spend the effort I would go raxles as they use good quality NEW parts.
Im at 125k and mine are starting to show some stresses in the deeper grooves, and I may just go ahead and replace them before the whole understrut, innerwheel get covered in that thick green grease. That stuff is a real bicth to clean and I need to replace the back up switch on the bottom of my lsd tranny as it is leaking gear oil. Good Luck

I just checked with raxles and they have thm for $119. That seems pretty reasonable to me. Does anyone know a good online dealership to check the price for an oem joint and boot? I wouldn't buy anything rebuilt from autozone or pepboys. I don't trust any part of my car to either of them. Thanks for the raxles link. Looks like a good product.
vsamoylov-
do you have one from an abs auto car and is it in good shape with low mileage?

I have a raxles axle... VERY good quality, I highly recommend it. For around $130 shipped, you are much better off replacing an axle than just the boot.
An OEM product may be better than an aftermarket one, but not when it's broken. There is no warranty if you replace the boots, but there is a lifetime warranty from Raxles.
