Help, where is this noise coming from?

I have a 98 SE auto with 60k miles (and i noticed a slight decline in gas mileage). I hear a loud growl whenever i'm over 1.5k rpm and I assume its coming from my exhaust or muffler.

does anyone know how i can find out for sure where the noise is coming from?

Have someone step on the gas when you are next to the car try to see if you hear any leaks. Also see if all the hangers are on the exhuast system, it might be exhuast vibration. Just go outside and listen.

How would could you tell if there are any leaks by just listening outside the car? This kinda confused me, can you explain?

Is there a way that i can prove it's the catalytic converter's fault?

if its the cat,

1)how much will it cost to fix/replace? US dollars
2)from 1 to 10, how hard is it a DIY job? where installing clear corners is 1 and repairing transmission is 10.
3)is there any web sites on repairing my problem?

Thanks guys

Where is the noise coming from? An exhaust leak will sound kinda like a really long, loud, slow fart. Sorry thats all I could think of. To test the cat go back to the tailpipe and sniff. If it smells like eggs then your cat is destroyed. I don't know how much OEM cats are but RT makes em for about $200. The install difficulty depends on what tools you have. Without a jack and stands its impossible. With a jack I'd put it at a 4.5.

It is a long and loud noise, i really hope its my exhaust (stock ypipe). So it would give me no choice but to buy a Budget ypipe. haha
