air bag repair. am I getting screwed?

I've got my car in the shop right now because the air bag light was flashing at me. Turns out there's a short somewhere in the system and it's gonna cost $515 to repair it. I'm not sure if it's the driver's side steering wheel or side curtain air bag but it's on the driver's side. Am I getting screwed here or does that seem about right?

I believe there is a federal law that you can not repair airbag wiring harnesses. So in that case if there is a short you have to REPLACE the whole harness. The reason I know this is b/c a friend of mine's sister took her ML500 to a stereo shop to get some subs installed. The installer was messing around with the wires in the back left door to find a wire to tap the remote for the amp to. He CUT the wires for the back door airbags and then saudered them back together. There was enough resistance in the wires for the airbag light to come on. The MB dealer found this, and charged them $4,000 to replace the ENTIRE wiring harness in the car. The audio shop wanted to repair it themselves but the dealership told them the law required replacing the harness so they had to pay up- there was no way around it. So anyway depending on what is wrong and what is being replaced you are getting a deal.

Thanks for the reply. I kind of thought it might be something along those lines. If one thing goes wrong, replace it instead of repairing it. After speaking to the mechanic again, he said the problem is in the air bag module itself, not the wires leading to it. So I guess if I want an air bag, I'm gonna need a new module. It's on order and will be fixed by this time tomorrow...
