cheapest way to make exaust system easier to flow?

Hi, I went to a mechanic a few weeks ago, to see how much would it cost to get a new exaust system for my car, ad he told me, that the only thing I really need to change is the flex tube (if you ever looked under your car you know what I'm talking about) and that would give me the most hp gain.

Now my questions are:

1. How much gain could I expect just by doing that change?
2. Does changing my muffler to a straighter one help on HP?
3. Could someone tell me, what parts of the exaust system allow the car to gain more HP? (yes changing every thing will give me more HP, but I want to know the exact part and how much could probably give.)
example: muffler = 5hp y-pipe = 20hp b-pipe = 5hp ... etc

I'm asking this because I want to make my car faster but I don't have alot of money at all.

Thanks

What is the "flex tube"......flex section? and why would you need to change it?

ur mechanic is not very intelligent n e ways, the flex section as well as the entire y pipe are the most restrictive parts of the exhaust, change that and u'll be looking at ~10-15 WHEEL hp gain. the rest of the exhaust really does not net that much of a horsepower gain, but they do make it more fun in terms of driveability and sound

I think hes talking about the "crimped" section in the B-pipe. That is the most(only) restrictive part of the Bpipe. You could have them cut it out and put a smoother one in there......

maybe so, but theres no flex in the crimped section, which is why i think hes talking about the flex. That crimped part and the y pipe are the most restrictive pieces in out exhaust system, followed by the b and then the exhaust.
