Terribly unexciting: Another Maxima with a full Stillen body kit w/tinted tails
SubscribeI finally completed my Stillen body kit last weekend, after 2 years of just running with the lip. Some guys might be interested in the tinted tailights and 5th gen muffler.

Those are H&Rs, but they never seem to look very good in pictures (ie sit high). When I'm in the car the springs go down another .5". I've had Intrax, but they took out way too much wheel travel and made for a crappy ride. The H&Rs sit about .5" higher and the ride is light years better. It's a trade off.Originally Posted by R5a7B

My favorite 95-96 by far...very clean and tasteful man.
Whenever a 95-96 owner says they have no choice in tails other than altezzas I point them to your car

Car looks gorgeous!
Amazing.. I did that to my 1996 tails and I had nothing but flames from .Org members. You do it and all is good.
Dave and his magic! It was ok for a while but I got sick of having half matte and half gloss taillights and thinned it off. Pic below.

Didn't he used to have the whole taillight smoked? I liked that a lot..Originally Posted by Vyrus

Hey would deep green pass off as black? You can hardly see the green on mine.
looks great. way to represent the 95/96 look and not convert the front and rear end to 97+ like so many people are doing.
Looks great Dave. I love the body kit look; really adds some classiness and sportiness to your ride. I'm flying down to KC for the day on 2/10. Maybe I'll see if your car is always so clean.

hey dave, the car looks fantastic ! Very, very clean like the other guys said. Now you have looks and speed ! That is one bad MAX ! Job well done !
Dave, that is a very clean classy look! I think only the extreme dark green or black would show the tails as well as yours does. I wish I had the money and know how to start the modification process on my 98.
Very nice! I love the tails especially. I dont suppose you could tell us what paint you used? And the process? Just the outer lens, or the insides too?

WOW, That was a great idea for the tails for anyone that has a black max!!! that really does look nice i envy you for that idea now all i need is some pointers on how to do it!! let me know!! thanks a lot!!!
Thanks guys. I really wasn't expecting such a response since I really don't think my ride is that "custom". I really appreciate the compliments. A carbon fiber hood with black anodized hood pins is next.
Here's the paint I used:

Most rice shops seem to carry it. I like it because even though the tails are just smoked, 95% of the stock light comes thru. The reason they look a little flat (they're not near as flat in person) is because there is translucent red paint under smoke paint from when I had the ambers tinted red. I went back to the smoked look because I look better on my black Max. In the process, the red paint underneath made the smoke paint a little flat. I'll probably do some wet sanding to bring a little more shine out of the paint.
Painting is easy. Simply remove the taillights, mask off the area you want smoked and then paint in thin coats. I believe I went with 3 thin coats. I didn't want it black, I just wanted to make it look like the taillights off of the older VW Golf GTIs (mid 90s) and make the taillight look more uniform.
I think the smoked tails will look fine on most any color Maxima. Just use thin coats. If you use too much paint, simply use finger nail polish remover. It will remove the paint, but will not cloud the plastic like thinner will.

Yes, the front lip isn't very glossy. The reason being I painted it myself with black spray paint (with flex agent). Seeing that the front is constantly scraping curbs and streets, it takes some abuse and has to be touched up about twice a year. It was hard to justify getting the lip done professionally with how much abuse it takes. It wasn't so noticeable until I put the rest of the kit on. I'll probably wet sand it and spray some gloss on to try and even it out some. Dave

hmmm....not so sure about that. it looks so much better on your black max than on Vyrus's red.Originally Posted by Dave B

how do the lights still functions? are the still visible and bright? it would be spectacular if you could take night pics....it looks like it would kill the light emission

It's a crappy pic because I had to time the shutter to match the hazard flashes. As you can see, all the light is coming through and matches the untinted light below. Keep in mind that my ambers were tinted red prior, so when my turn signals come on, they're red. When I just had smoke over the ambers, the lights would still be amber when they were on. BTW, red turn signals are legal for those wondering.
As for Vyrus' car, I'm sure it looks better in person and out of direct sunlight. His talis may even look better if he were to redo them and just smoke them lightly so the contrast isn't so aggressive.
Dave
wow! thanks for the speedy timing, that was awesome.
now i'm very interested in this mod....i like not having to open my tails like in the dallas tail light mod. not because its bad, just because i know i could mess something up
thank you again dave

Looks good. That's nice and clean. The only rant is the Nissan emblem on the rear, 95/96's look so clean with no emblems IMHO. Is it just me or is your front lip a different color that the side skirts? It looks to be a flatter black?

I ran my car with no emblems on the back for about 3 years. I put the hamburger back on on a whim and decided I liked it because it added just a little something to butt. I'm always trying to style my Maxima after the Bavarian makes and BMW offers thier models with no emblems on the rear except for the BMW emblem. I kind of did the same.Originally Posted by RastaManMax

Now that's how a 95/96 should look. I've always wanted to smoke my tails, but I heard that the spray stuff doesn't come off. I'm refering to this stuff thats similar to your paint, called Nite Shadez or something like that. You think that simple nail polish remover would do the trick?
Do you guys think a thin layer of this stuff would look good on a silver I30 like mine? I think it would go well with my gunmetal rims and dark tint.
Oh Dave, a light tint would look real nice on your car...more black is always good.
