Max has the shakes

Just replaced my 96 GLE with a 97 SE and having problems getting the tires balanced. The car has 130k on it and stock SE rims. I just replaced the tires with the Michelin Hydraedge and the car now shakes from 70-80 MPH. I've had them balanced 3 times now with no luck. They tell me the wheels are straight and everything checks out fine but the car vibrates bad on the interstate. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if maybe something in the suspension is wore out and with the new tires it is making this problem show up. Also the car needs new rotors but I'm doubtful this is the problem and I thought about swapping the front and rear tires to see if that helps. Thanks in advance for the help.

Tires may be defective...I would reverse the tires & wheels from the front to the rear and try it again. You may need to reverse them a few times ,untill you find out exactly where the problem is. It s a good ideea to have an alignment done when you replace the tires , (mandatory if the old tires are worn uneven). Again, there may be a tire that cannot be properly balanced. It would look good on the machine ( because is without a load on it) but it would shake at higher speeds (not normal to do that). I had the same problem with my wifes car when I did the first tire rotation. The tires come with full warranty and the shop that you bought it from should assist you regarding this matter. Good luck ,adn I hope that my info was helpful a bit.
P.S. Sometimes it may help if you rotate the tire on the rim half of th way. Sometimes the new tire has a dot on ,that usually need to be placed next to air valve. Some shops don t pay any attention to that. However, I did align tires that way before , and even then I couldn t properly balance the tire. I do my own tire swaps ,and I know those little details from what I learned so far...

I would say is not that, and that is because he feels vibration at 70-80 only. The joints or rods free play would be felt a lot sooner that 70miles. I still think that his problem is one tire or a little off alignment...Maybe he ll let us know once he finds the reason...

Thanks for all the info so far. I got out there and pulled my wheels off to swith th front and rear and to my suprise both CV shaft boots are busted. Does anyone know how this would affect the handling at speed, would it make my car shake like this? Thanks again.

Sometimes if your tires are deflated, or one of them, on high speeds it could cause shaking as you've described

So you are saying you have taken the car into the same shop THREE times asking about a vibration and they didn't see that EITHER of your front CV boots were torn?? That would worry me a bit. I would try fixing those first as they definitly need to be replaced regardless of what is causing the vibration. Here is a link if you want to do it yourself: http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/401

Yes torn CV joints would deff make the car vibrate at higher speeds. Do you hear any clicking while turning at speeds less than 10 MPH?
