Coilover systems are designed to have sleeves and collars that lets the ride height of the car be adjusted without dissasembling the suspension. It is usually adjusted by jacking up the side, and turning the collar with the supplied wrench. Coilovers fall into two main categories:
Complete coilover systems were designed from the ground up to be racing suspensions that have a very high level of adjustment and also will ride very stiff at the stock spring rates. They generally have adjustments for spring collar height, shock bumpstop height and shock rates (sometimes independant rebound and compression). Some also have built in adjustments for front camber. Complete coilover systems also remove all the rubber components in your stock suspension that prevent your shocks from working at their full potential. These complete coilover systems will outhandle any other suspension combination by far when tuned correctly. Prepare for a very stiff sporty ride when picking it.
Spring and sleeve coilovers are cheaper versions of the above named coilover systems. The handling of these can be almost as great as the ones above if paired with performance shocks and a large drop is not set (due to the non-adjustable shock bumpstop limiting suspension travel) The Maxima on uncut stock bumpstops can only be lowered about 2.5 inches before the suspension is sitting directly on the bumpstops. More can be achieved with bumpstop cutting or replacement MaximaDustBoots. Be warned that riding on the bumpstops can create dangerous handling and an increased chance of bending rims. These are also generally very stiff and should only be paired with adjustable shocks. MaximaShocks
