Air Bag Light and Sensor

Air Bag Light and Sensor
I have a 95 Maxima with 102k miles. The Airbag warning light recently came on. I just brought it to a dealer and he said I needed a new sensor unit and he gave me a price of $1040 OUCH just for the part. He eventually lowered it to $820 but that still hurts. I wonder what my options are.
- If I found a unit somewhere else would any non Dealer install it because of potential liability with repairing airbag related things?
- Where would I find this part. I assume there is no aftermarket for this and if I could even find one in a junkyard would it be worthwhile even pursing this.
Thanks,
Russ

i'm suprised that he lowered the price.. did you tell hm that you're broke? what did he say when he lowered the price?
I am having the same problem. My Air Bag light has been blinking for 4 months now and I am use to the light blinking.
I can't even turn off the light by pressing the driver's side door's switch 7 or 10 times while the car's key is on "ON".
My door switch broke so I can't press it 7 or 10 times. =(
But if I was to get it fixed, i'd goto a nissan dealership and no place else.

When i bought my 95 the airbag light was blinking. The dealer walked out to my car with a computer, pushed some buttons to clear the fault and it hasnt blinked since. Dealer didnt charge me a dime.

Actually, when I left the dealership the Airbag light was out and when I noticed it, I turned around and went back to the dealer. They said that they reset it after doing their tests but the light would probably go back on. Its been about 12 hours now and the light hasn't come back on. Maybe I will be lucky and it will stay off.
If that happens does it mean that this was just a false signal and my airbag was alright or does it mean that the light indicator is not now working and my airbag will not work properly. I don't care about a lot of cosmetic things about my 'old' car now but I would like the airbag to work if needed.
