1998 max se rattle/clanging sound

I've got a 1998 max se 5spd. In the morning when I first start the car I hear a rattle/clanging sound under the hood at idle. It usually last for a couple of minutes and then the noise goes away. When I get in first gear the sound comes back as I accelerate and then goes away after I reach 2000rpm. If I shift to second and drop below approx. 2000rpm the sound comes back again until I go above 2000rpm. My check engine light is on and I got the code 5014 wich I checked with the decoder and it was unrecognized. Any ideas as to what this could be? Bad coils? MAF?

0514 has to do with the EGR system. Maybe someone else will be able to explain the code better...

I think the code and the noise are unrelated - the noise sounds like the typical timing chain tensioner issue many of us have. Its a pretty cheap fix (~$100 if I remember correctly, but don't quote me).

To make sure that's it, take a listen to the engine with the hood open. If you hear it coming from the passenger side of the car, toward the middle/back of the engine, then that's the tensioner.

Sound travels, make sure your exhaust is secure.
