Springs, struts, and overall suspension (mine is shot)

Ok, well
maybe its not entirely shot
I need 2 new struts and 2 new shocks. I don't know much about cars so some advice here would be appreciated. My mechanic quoted me the price of $687. I was wondering if that is a reasonable price or what. And also I was thinking of maybe just putting new struts and shocks all around just to get a better suspension, something that would last longer. I like taking it hard on the curves. I knew this would happen eventually and was planning to get a better suspension set up any way.

ok, I'm assuming that the springs were $210 and the struts were $405. so $615 + $206 for install, = $821. now I was quoted $687 for 2 struts and 2 shocks, not the whole deal. It sounds like you are getting a better deal than I would be if I went with this mechanic. A suspension drop isn't really necesary but if it means a better ride/performance i'd go for it. I'm really looking for something that will last longer, I can be pretty harsh on, and still provide an overall smooth ride. I'm a college student and colleges like to have really bumpy roads so something that can handle those would be nice. I checked out http://maxmods.dyndns.org/index.php?SuspensionSelection
The koni yellows or tokico illuminas with H&Rs sound nice, think those would do the trick?

Well the big difference is hes gettin a much better strut with 4 adjustments in the front and 8 in the back and all 4 New springs that lower the stance of the car about 1.4 inches....all your probably gettin is whatever that shop is using for the struts (some name brand but nothing like AGX's)

You can also get a combo you like and find someone in your area from the .org to put them in ($120-$150)

ok this may seem stupid or ignorant (pic one if you must).
Whats the difference between a shock and a strut?

some other questions, may be good for a sticky.
How long should shocks/struts/springs last?
what brands are good?
what to expect to pay?
anything else you can think of?
