White smoke, I think?
Ok today I was leaving the video store, car wasn't exactly hot, but it was above the cold mark. Well I pulled in to traffic, it was a little tight but not bad, anyways I accelerated pretty good cause it is fun. While doing this I looked in my rearveiw and noticed a lot of white smoke.
So I get home have my friend whatch the tail pipe while I rev it. He said it was mostly clear and then at one point it baiscly just spewed smoke then it stoped and back to normal. Then I got out and watched and every once and a while I could see a little bit of white somke come out, not much at all, and the engine was reving from 1k-4.5k, smoke seemed to come out more at the higher RPMs.
So any ideas? I was think valve guides or something of that nature. Man this sucks, I just got this car and the dealer has been trying for 2 months to fix this oil leak, and in the process he has introduced a coolant leak. I did all I could before I bought this car to make sure it was good, but I fail. oh yeah the car has 127k (I am poor and I got it 5.5k, it looks nice and still drives great just these three problems that make it suck). Oil = Blue
Burnt Gas = Black
Coolant = White (due to a head gasket)
My guess is that its just condenstation from not running it all the way hot before turning your car off....look around on a cold day, everones car is "smoking" presay, but its only condensation

it was about 40ish outside, so not to cold. it might be coolant, the mechanic working on it is a really dumb guy so he might have messed something up, I am taking it to a different shop tomorrow see what they say. This smoke doesn't really look like condensation but there is a far amount of water coming out. If it is a head gasket how much do think it would cost to fix? thanks for the help.
As stated before, the only thing that causes white smoke aside from condensation is a faulty head gasket. The easiest way you can confirm this is by checking your coolant for oil traces and checking your oil for coolant traces. If it is the head gasket, the problem is not as severe, yet but should be addressed. A blown head gasket will overheat the engine. I'm agreeing with what has been said already- condensation. If you can, start the car (cold) in a garage. You'll note very little to no smoke. This is only if you do not have a head gasket problem. Otherwise, you'll see white smoke in any condition.
I was talking with some people at work about this today, somebody suggested a burnt valve? Is that a possibility? If it is is that something you can do in your driveway, and could you do a head gasket in your driveway? I read the Chiltons walk through on the head gasket it is a lot of work but if I took my time maybe 4 or 5 days to fix? Thank you so much for your help!

in this case I agree with formz, the exhuast seems to smell a little sweet, whch would be coolant. However I don't see water in my oil, nor oil in my water. Well I am getting the stuff to work on it here in a little bit so it is time to get dirty mwuhahaha

I was wondering about this...
I have a 98 with just over 50K on it and I sometimes see this white smoke comming from the exhaust. Now, I could be wrong but, if you were burning coolant wouldn't your Coolant reserve in your engine bay start to go low...? I'm not sure. I know I have a small oil leak... But, I went a head and had my wife step on the gas a few times to see what would happen. It looked like regular exhast fumes but, it did smell rich... Of course the more she pushed on the gas the thicker it got. do you know why the smell would be so rich...like gasoline? I use only 92 oct and I recently put on a CAI. any thoughts?

Yes, you're right. If coolant were seeping past the head gasket, you would loose coolant in the reservoir. Many times, people don't see a loss of water/coolant and wonder where the water is going. A loss of coolant and no apparent leaks is a good sign that you have a head gasket issue. At 50k, I highly doubt you have any problems with the gasket though. As far as the gas smell, were you doing this with the engine cold? The engine will run rich when cold because the 02 sensors do not operate until the engine is warm. I can't think of any other reason right now why this would happen.
Well as soon as I can fix my coolant leak or figure out where it is coming from then I will be able to tell if my coolant level goes down for no apparant reason. Right now I think the leak is coming from the gasket on the thermostat but I don't know. What about a burnt valve though? I haven't read anything about that on here, it seems like it could happen to any car, but what would have to happen for that to occur?

I don't believe there is any condition called a "burnt valve" All the valves do is isolate the cylinder from the intake and exhaust ports during the engine cycle, they are not near any coolant. If you had a broken valve your car would most likely be misfiring.
