ok, i have a autometer 5" monster tach with shift lite in my car. so i may be able to help. on the auto meter there are 4 wires coming out of the back along with 2 looped wires. the red is positive which i wired into my cig lighter socket. and ground as well. the green wire was for illumination so i tapped into the wire on the ashtray light for that since i found out it turns on with your parking lights. the last wire which i believe was white went to a wire in the back of the guage cluster. look at your wiring diagram for the back of the cluster in your haynes manual. quite easy to wire in. people can flame me all they want but my tach was free and i only use it for the shift lite. i am removing it soon though, so if anyone would mind telling me how to make or wire a shift lite alone that would be great.

oh yeah, the two looped wires, to config the tach for 4 cylinder your supposed to cut both loops, to config for 6 cut the darker colored one only and for v8 leave them alone. im not sure what brand tach you plan on getting, but i believe this is how it went for me. hope i was some help.
