HORRIBLE Gas Mileage 220/tank. Overdrive Contributing?

I have a 1995 Maxima SE. I use premium (93) fuel only and go about 70% city 30% highway on every tank. I get about 200-220 miles until the light. What will give me better milage Overdrive ON (light off) or Overdrive OFF (light on). Currently I have overdrive enabled. Please help, I can't afford to waste $30+ every week. THANKS

Leaving overdrive on (light off) will give better mpg, im pretty much in the same area of gas mileage, and i rarely drive with OD off.

Bad Gas Milage could also be caused by a bad Knock Sensor.

Well that about sums up the OD button, but it does mention using it on and off in traffic and such. So does it contribute to MPG at ALL?

Of course your overdrive enabled is the better fuel-saving option. That is the reason it is there.
How hard do you drive?
220 miles on a full tank of gas = about 12 gallons
If you driving is "normal" it is probably KS. Does the car hesitate, when accelerating? Is cold starting an issue too?

Huh? I get about 370 miles per tank and that's 100% city driving.

I'd run the ECU for codes if I were you.

Well i drive fast. Now it doesnt mean i floor it at every light, but i cruise at about 40-45 mph in the city and 75-80 on the local intrastate. I get crap out of my fuel. Every week $30 add that to insurance and you have one BROKE kid. I'm 18 and my job pays me only so much!

Then there is a problem if you have to hit the Gas pedal after you start it. Check the car for cods.

So do I. And I never get below 350 a tank. I gun the hell out of my car every time I drive it. Go check the codes and let us know what's up.

Yeah, but back then it was probably nice and hot outside, assuming this happened this year.

0304 on mine... And we all know what that means! KS
I can't believe you didn't get the same one. You sure that there wasn't a double code? One after the other. It just seems like an identical issue.

OD doesn't do ANYTHING for fuel economy in city driving. Drive with it ON all the time then drive with it off all the time. The difference will be minimal. One thing to remember is to turn OD on for the highways and whenever you go over 40mph.

I have the same problem with my 95 SE, i usually get 215 MPT, its horrible, and gas prices are so high. The only codes I get is a KS code, but i dont know why if my KS was changed less than a year ago, brand new from factory. =/

When Your turn the O/D off, The Engine RPM goes higher. Because the Tranny stays in 3rd Gear. So when the car runs in Higher RPM what would you think will happen? Does it Burn more Gas? Or less gas??

No actually I drive like a bat out of hell, as a matter if fact I just got my license back after losing it for too many tickets. Every single time I drive my car it gets gunned the hell out of. And I still get around 360-370.......every single time.

chk your tire inflation, if it's underinflated, you'll get worse gas mileage

I have the same problem. In brooklyn, usually get around 230. It adds up at $30 every week. I feel your pain. When this first happened I switched my 02 sensor and got better mileage. Right now I just had my ks changed and I still get around 230 on a full tank.

You sure the O/D button has anything to do w/gas mileage? i mean, I agree w/Big D and at least having it on over 40mph and maybe having it off in a stop-go situation (traffic jam), but i never knew it contributed to gas loss/gain.

Well i check the ecu for the codes, and its 0505 for sure. Next, my tires are pefect since i jus had an oil change a week ago. Next, i called my mechanic he said that for a 95 SE with 120k miles 220-250/ tank is fine. Also i spoke with the previous owner who had it from 95 untill i got it. He said with every year he got lil by lil worse. And what im gettin now is normal. Last but not least the car was serviced ONLY by the dealer since 95. Im taking about every single part being from the dealer only. phew... now that im done, im figuring until total empty tank i can squeeze 250. and i guess its fine with me.

Try some SeaFoam to get the carbon out. How many miles on your O2 sensors?

I get bad gas mileage b/c I drive my car cold to and from school almost everyday so I know my MPG will be higher when I get a y-pipe (so the pre-cats are gone). I know my engine isn't in great condition since the last owner didn't maintain the car well. I'm going to try that Auto-Rx stuff in my engine. I think that my fuel injectors are sticking since the car runs better with fuel system cleaner in the tank. After I get a part time job, I'll get a y-pipe, new O2s, and try a few things out in order to get better MPG
