I got my auto 97 SE up to 135 before I ******* out and let off. One day I shall hit 140, but I must say even at 135, the car felt planted (note: I did not attempt to change lanes or do anything stupid).

95gxe

i'm in a 95 gxe, and yes i had to put a speed sensor bypass switch to the computer(which i've seen no ill effects from).

i drop from 140 to 135-136 up the BIG LONG hills in New Brunswick. i've crused at 140 (which seems to be my top, because like mentioned earlier, i just run out of gear) for 10 - 15 mins throuhg NB at night, a beautiful feeling! the car sat on the road remarkably well, I thought it would drift more on the corners... pleasently supprised. (though still not a sports car..)

breaking sucks, just don't drive like that when there is anyone else on the road(and pray there is no wildlife!!)

I have 170 miles on my car(270km) and it seemed quite content to sit at the high speed. I could back way of the gas and the car would get quiet and yet sustain the speed, and then dromp it and hear it roar, but i just couldn't break 140mph... but i'm content (sort of)

I'd have to agree with Steve on all accounts. A 4th gen 5 speed with the MEVI/JWT ECU/Y/I is probably good for 148-150mph. In stock form, a 5 speed is good for around 138-140mph. An automatic 4th gen simply doesn't have the gearing or power to top out as high as a 5 speed.

As for those of you that say you know you've been over 140mph, how do you know the exact numbers? The last time I looked, my speedometer goes to 140mph Don't forget that speedometers are wildly off after 110mph and typically read too high. When Motor Trend does their top speed tests, they always note how optimistic the speedometers are in comparison to the true speed of the car. I believe the it was the Porsche 911TT that shows 201mph even though it was only doing 189mph and the Viper showed 198mph while doing a true 187mph. A stock LS1 F-Body 6 speed with a power to weight ratio of 11:1, a ton more torque (most important for topspeed), a lower CD, and good gearing tops out at a DRAG (not gear) limited 157-159mph. I highly doubt a bolt-on Maxima with much less power and torque, worse gearing, and a higher CD is going to match the topend of LS1 F-Body. Hell, even the C5 6 speed Vette is only good to around 175mph and the Z06 is only good to 170mph (gear limited though).

Good points DaveB.

This is my experience, only going off estimation and the speedometer, so it's probably off.

SC/MEVI - 150-155mph on the San Fernando valley freeway (very long, straight, and flat) in CA.

My fiance woke up and screamed. <Auuugh!> So i slowed it down to the speed limit.

1 mile later I passed a cop. If she had woken up 15 seconds later i would have been on my way to jail.

My own personal radar detector.

I know that some GXE's have a governor. The SE's and the GLE's do not.

BTW, I checked the FAQ's and couldn't find anything on this topic. Maybe I didn't look hard enough or am just plain blind.
147! (Downhill though) My buddy measured it in his Supra. Dead Stock.

i've got my car to ~137. After about that, the car slowly goes up to 140 and takes forever. The 5th gear runs out and the power up top is gone. I was running out of straight highway but i think i could of done it to about 140 or so.

Yeah, I've taken mine up to 140 a few times back when I was younger. Smooth as silk.

I will never stop being amazed by the pull 5th gear provides from 80-120......anyone feel me? I mean it's ridiculous. 4th is even pointless.
It just goes.............

Personally from 120+ who cares how fast you go.

Man, driving that fast is just dangerous on public streets. I guess you guys are doing it on the track or something...or at least I hope.

Well, here is my scenario. I have hit over 140 with 3 people in the car, I have been over the mark a few times on interstates only with no traffic. On I-65 on my way to Indy I went at it with a 94-96 Impala SS, with the V8. He was ahead of me and punched it at 75, I was in third because I saw the big clearing up ahead. I was on his *** dead even all the way to 140, and we kept it there past 140 for a few miles. I had to move over to the right because I was ever so slowly creeping up on him. I forgot to see what RPM's though! That was the most fun I ever had because it was a big, empty straight away at night. I have blown away a couple Acura's, and a V-6 Passat that started ahead of me, but died around 130 while I just kept hauling. I think the car is extremely stable at those speeds, and cross-drilled rotors are a major help.

Alas, fate caught up to me July 4th, 2003 on the Kennedy EXPY in Chicago while I was smashing an Integra with some loud exhaust. I had her over 135, and then after I slowed down a couple minutes later I saw those lovely cherries behind me. I was clocked at 128 mph. Six tickets...driving +73, improper lane useage, drag racing, no signals, reckless driving, and-(I still don't get this one)- following too closely. Needless to say, everything was dropped except reckless driving. I got no fines, and was not arrested at the scene. No suspensions and I got my license back because of my clean record. I had to do 25 days of SWAP, which is like community service, heck I still have 2 days left. The lawyer cost me $1,500, and the SWAP, (you have to pay to do it), $340, and 2 years probation cost me $600, ($25 for each month on probation to Cook County).

The Max has plenty of top end, and it gets good pick-up at the high speeds, but either have an amazing radar detector, or don't pick a holiday weekend for test runs!

I am so ashamed, on the way back from Vegas on a lonely road just outside Needles I tried a top speed run and could only get to 121! Now for the excuses: I had 3 BIG guys in the car, luggage, and a full tank of gas. I was on a slight uphill too, but I was ****ed that a '97 SE (a few mods) could not at least break 130. I will be near Joshua Tree soon so I will have to try again then. Hey, abradic, I have driven the Kennedy more times than I care to remember (as a chauffeur in Chicago) and can tell you about many nights in a 120" stretch limo at nearly the same speed. Ford stops its digital speedometers at 85 mph, but if you switch to kilometers it keeps ticking! NEVER saw a cop in 5 years.

Total Weight has very little to do with top speed. THe equation is set so weight really only affects acceleration, not top end... As far as air resistance thats where top end gets cut short. As speed doubles the air resistance increase by the "square" It is an EXPONENTIAL increase of resistance. So the laws of dimishing returns to apply. An example would be to move from lets say 130 - 131 MPH might take 160 hp... to move from 131-132 it would take 164hp but132-133 it would take 175ho. So at the top end every 5 horsepower no longer return any aditional top end.... Once you are at 200mph 1 more more mph take tons more HP or something like that if I would remember more Physics from college... I am DRUNK now so forgive sp/?
