brake dust shield

i'm in the middle of doing a brake job: replacing rear rotors, calipers, pads, and installing ss braided brake lines. i have a quick question though... the dust shield doesn't really do anything right? how do you take it off, and has anybody else done this? thanks in advance!

What dust shield? There wasn't a dust shield on my car, when I did the fronts. I haven't looked at the back. You don't mean the dust boots, right? Describe what it looks like, where it's mounted. A pic would be helpful.

I took mine off, you have to take the big nut off under the dust cover and pull the hub. I think that one is a 22mm socket.

Why would you want to take it off? What kind of wheels do you have that you could notice the shield?

There is a dust cover over the large nut in the center of the hub, it has to be popped off before you can see the nut.
