I did unscrew mine, but when I tried to unscrew my friend's who owns a 98 SE, I couldn't do it! It sat there so tightly that I tried with all my might many times and nothing. Finally, I got a pair of pliers, wrapped them in enough cloth so that it wouldn't damage the shift ****, and finally unscrewed it that way.

ALso, why do u want to replace the stock shift **** with an aftermarket one? I was looking to do the same, but once I shortened and grinded my shift lever, I put the stock **** back on. From all aftermarket *****, the stock Maxima shift **** is of VERY GOOD, IF NOT THE BEST QUALITY - better than any other aftermarket piece of crap I've seen, looks bad A$$ IMO because it's simple, curved, and has a very comfortable and nice feel to it, which is important. I know many people who bought aftermarket shift ***** only to be annoyed with them further down the road and took them off.
