My exhaust sounds like crap
Hey guys, I'm a newbie as you may have guessed. I bought a 96 max this last december and love the car. I just installed a y-pipe, hi-flow cat and 2.5" catback exhaust with a magnaflow muffler. I had the catback installed first, and it sounded very good just a nice deep tone to it. I then installed the y-pipe and cat. It sounded pretty good at idle, a little louder but good. The only problem i have is when i get on it. It sounds like a huge can of ****ed off bees from about 3000 rpms until it shifts. Now, to make that sound go away what should i do? I was thinking that the sound came from my 4.5" tip (N1 style muffler). I was thinking that i could put a resonator in the catback pipe since it doesn't have one, or maybe replace the muffler with a flowmaster or something. Any tips would be appreciated.

could be a lot of stuff:
1. check for leackage between each exhaust components
2. get header/exhaust wrap and wrap around the y-pipe, specifically at the flex section
3. adding a custom resonator on the b-pipe may help
4. my warpspeed y-pipe w/ magnaflow muffler has similar problem above 3,000rpm. but i dont' mind, cuz i drive below 3,000rpm 98% of the time, which is nice and deap. on the dyno, the y-pipe WHP/WTQ gain doesn't kick in until 3,500rpm. basically below 3,500rpm with an aftermarket y-pipe is no different than a stock maxima performance.

No, I haven't run the quarter yet. I wanna take my car to bandimere sometime this spring. My latest and greatest kill was a dodge stealth non-turbo, but i can still be proud about that. My car is auto by the way.

It's the N1 style muffler. Resonator will help, but it won't get rid of the sound. You've got to go with a different muffler style if you want to significantly change the sound of your exhaust.
