Lsd?

Sorry I haven't posted on here in years. Hope this isn't a stupid question. Can Limited Slip Dif be added to your Maxima?

Welcome back...

There is no such thing as a stupid question...unless the answer is in the FAQ

There are a couple of ways you can add LSD to a Maxima. Get a new/used tranny with factory VLSD in it; get a Quaife (good)/Phantom Grip (???)/something else (???) and have it put in.

A new tranny is ~$2300 for just the unit, a used one is difficult at best to find, and the Quaife is ~$1400.

After you get one, you now have to put it in (or pay someone to do it). If you decide to get a used one, make sure they know it's a real VLSD tranny before they ship it to you.

It depends upon the type, but basically, when one tire begins to slip, it transfers torque to both wheels, allowing two tires to apply power to the road. there are many types of LSDs, and they all have advantages/disadvantages.

our most stock differentials are non locking, which mean that only one wheel puts torque to the ground, and if one tire slips the tranny will put out more torque to that tire sence its easier to spin that one.

A VLSD, which most infinitie i30's have and some canadian maximas, are basicly diffs with clutch packs, or or viscous disks, so if one of the wheels is putting torque to the ground and the other one is stationary the clutch packs will create frictions (as the plates between the clutch disks that are connected to the half shaft spin between the them making friction so the plates would expand causeing the plates to lock up and aplying both of the wheels---Example http://www.netcomuk.co.uk/~kamdiffs/images/animcl5.gif ) so then u get more traction. Then there are the viscous plates which spin in silicone in the diff, so as one wheel is putting torque to the ground the discs would turn in the silicon, making friction so the silicone would expand and make the other wheel grip also. Viscous and clutch type diffs are almost the same but the vscous would have the silicone instead of the clutches.

A LSD...most are locking type, which means that the halfshafts are basicly locked together, so when u go through the corner both of the tires would spin the same speed so making the inside tire slip cause its turning too fast for the speed its going.

sorry if i didn't make my self clear, but that's basicly the principal, i might be missing something or might have flipped things around but correct me if im worng, thanx

hehe j/k

I only do it because it really is the best answer to the posted question. I use to post really long answers to the same damn questions over and over again, until I got sick of it and created a website that has all that information in one place. Fortunately a lot of people find it really helpful.

Thanks guys I apprecaite all the info... and Drewm that site was very helpful. I didn't realize how much that would cost. So I might have to reconsider doing this.

Thanks, it's a fantastic reference. I use MaxMods almost daily at this point (bought a Max, looking into which mods I'm going to do and how much they'll cost). The user-editable feature is great!
