Ball joints and spring "rubber"?

As per my one of my previous posts, my front left suspension has been squeaking when I go over bumps, and when I turn the steering wheel. I took it to Speedy for a free estimate and they told me I need a new ball joint. How can I replace this? Hard? Writeup?

Also, when he jacked up the car, the rubber covering the spring was out of place, so he nudged it back in there. That seemed to stop the squeaking sound, but about 10 minutes later it started again. Is there a way to permanently fix this without replacing the entire spring?

Thanks.

The ball joint isn't the easiest thing in the world. You need to remove the brake caliper/rotor making sure to disconnect the abs wire from the strut bracket so the wire doesn't become strained when you eventually move the spindle out of the way. Remove the cotter key on the lower ball joint and loosen the nut as far as you can. Remove the drive axle nut. You will need a pickle fork (ball joint splitter) to break the ball joint away from the spindle. Once you have the ball joint nut off and the spindle disconnected from the top of the ball joint remove the lower strut bolts. Take a coat hanger and cut it in half and connect it to the spindle and the strut spring to move it out of your way. Take a large hammer and pound out the ball joint, it will eventually drop out. You will need a ball joint press device to press the new ball joint into the lower control arm. You can probably rent that from autozone. Once the joint is in just reverse the removal procedure. Hope this helps!

About your spring issure I am not to sure what a simple fix would be?
