keyless entry remote

this is weird
but I saw a remote from the 95-99 generation on a 2000 Maxima key on a co-worker's desk. I went to go ask him about the year and trim of his Maxima. He bought is late 99 (a 2000 model) and the key is different. It has the chip embedded in the plastic but the remote is the same as mine (97 GLE). I thought it was quite bizzare since now all the remotes on the 2000 max's look different. btw, the 2000 altima uses a version of the remote that is from the pathfinder and maxima of the late 90's...It is the same as my remote except the unlock button has the panic button also...so perhaps some items remained the same.
*sorry I couldn't have provided more help*
