Limited Slip Question

Ok, I get the basic idea behind limited slip diffs but I wonder-

Is this something with no drawbacks? The proverbial free lunch? (once you buy it )
Meaning it gives you better performance w/o robbing any power any of the time?

The drawback is that it costs more. Overall power at the wheels really shouldn't change much if at all.
