stock integra v.s. stock 96 max

I've got a friend who has a stock integra (stick), i've got an automatic max, but i recently had the opportunity to race him (legally). the first run I smoked him bad, second he put my max to shame. I was wondering what it would take for me to beat him, would simply having a manual transmision do it or mods?
