Driving with O/D Off Consistently

I always drive with O/D off to save the tranny from having to shift to fourth gear plus the car accelerates much quicker (atleast for me). What are your opinions about driving with O/D off all the time (gas milieage, tranny problems, engine problems, etc.)? How will it affect the car in the long run?

mainly for stop and go traffic. less mpg on the highway but better off for serious city driving.

Sure, you probably save it from the extra shift and no question on acceleration, especially from slower speeds.

However, once you get over 40-50 MPH your mileage will suffer if you don't have it on.

For around town its a great idea, on the highway absolutely not.

will turning it on and off to best accomodate City or Highway driving wear down the tranny on the long run?

No, I think you will save wear, thats why I do it.

But because I do it don't make it true, however if you think about it, you can see the logic.

It is not going to hurt the tranny. If it is going to do anything, it is going to eventually wear out the button or make the electronic part of it malfunction. But Nissan put it there to use. I mean, they wanted you to have the option to use the OD or not.

Yeah, what the others said about the gas mileage. It will be horrible if you don't use it above about 40-45.

driving around town its fine to go with OD off because you are at relatively low speeds. But on the highway doing it consistently it forces your engine to be at higher rpms therefore causing more wear and lowering gas mileage.

Heck, if you just leave it in low 1 you can save even more transmission wear because it won't ever shift.

but then you get bad gas mileage doing anything over like 15-20 mph.

If I'm cruising 60-70mph and I'm about to pass someone, I'll hit O/D off so that I don't have to stomp the gas to get it to downshift... I've found it to be much more effective at passing than just pressing the gas harder.... much less harsh of a downshift IMO

its always been a hot topic of debate. But I usually keep it off locally or if im stuck in stop and go traffic. But on highways you better keep it on

I believe the sarcasm would be you saying that you could just leave it in 1st, 98SterlingMax. I mean, you would blow your tranny and engine. I would not drive around in 1st without every shifting to 2nd, but I hope you were joking.

i always keep it off and only turn it on when i get up to about 55-60mph on a highway...

also when about to pass someone, i just click the button and it downshifts...i've been doing it in all the "auto" cars that i drive....

it doesn't do anything bad..

I noticed much better acceleration with OD off when I am in Reverse... especially when passing.

passing in reverse?? that's good one! lol

OD OFF is good for racing, but i forgot nobody here races, so we leave it off

when od is off your engine needs about 3.5k rpms to keep ~70mph when od is on it needs 2K-2.5K better gas, worse performance

It will increase wear (maybe not an appreciable amount) around town and might actually decrease gas mileage. Don't underestimate the long-term importance of the lock-up function.

These are the 95-01 5-speed gear ratios:

1st 3.285
2nd 1.850
3rd 1.272
4th 0.954 <----overdrive
5th 0.795 <----overdrive

Please don't pWn yourself next time. You made it much too easy

He was saying he has a 5-speed tranny (obviously ) and leaves O/D off by not shifting into 5th. I was just letting him know that 4th is overdrive also on a 5-speed. Read into **** before you get again. No one's ever made it so easy for me

Where I come from, we spell own with an "o." Maybe not where you are from. Just take a glance at yourself before you try to blame somebody else for something or flame them for making a joke.

1. No **** it was supposed to be spelled with an "o". You can do better than that.

2. He wasn't joking. He was trying to make me look stupid but made an a$$ out of himself.

3. You don't understand the context of my post that you just quoted.

To sum it all up, STFU. I seriously doubt anybody asked for your $.02. Have a nice day
