What's the best clutch?
I'm so fu{king ****ed...my clutch is getting soft again after only 40k miles...of course it could be all the racing
What's the best clutch for the 4th gen? Stock or aftermarket, and if aftermarket which one? I'm so sick of Nissan's jerky transmissions...

I've got an ACT and I like it a lot. It sucks in traffic, though. The pedal gets very heavy.
Resurfacing the flywheel will clean it up, get rid of hot-spots, and make it true. It's a good idea to do this whenever you change the clutch. At least get it checked out.

In order of recommendation:

I'd personally go for a spec clutch. I've never heard one complaint about them yet.

i think stock is the best, unless you have alot mor epower than stock going throught it i would omt even bother. ACT become very difficult to work with in traffic and is more choppy when dirving it slowly. Just go with stock, unless you have a bunch of mods where the gripping power wuld be needed.
i like my stock in terms of smootheness , but i get some slip at high rpm and racing, and that blows. also , im in pittsburgh now so i need a tough clutch to handle all the hills. ... how is the spec type 1 compared to stock ? there isnt much info on them. should i get stage 1 or 2 ?
IMO, if you're not boosting then stock is best. I'm talking about the true OEM clutch too, not the crap $150 "blue" clutch kit Nissan will install when your original clutch wears out. The true OEM clutch has to be ordered in parts (ie pressure plate, TOB, clutch disk, etc) and will cost about $270. The blue kit will slip under high rpms and high rpm shifts, it's a fact. My stock clutch has ~105K miles with about 170 1/4 passes on it. It's never slipped once. I think the TOB and pressure plate may give up before the clutch disk does.
I would never recommend ACT or Exedy unless you plan on pushing much higher power. These clutches grab hard and can cause gear failures in 2, 3, and 4. If you choose to run one of these clutches then you'd better shift softly unless you want to risk replacing a tranny. These clutches are also not known for their reliability or driveability. I've read numerous posts on the Org about the clutch disk shredding with only 5-10K miles and clutch shutter is common.

Hey Dave- Like your car. Been reading and learning using you as a mode. Im happy to find you on this forum. I used to live in olathe, so that is how i found out about the Kansas City Maxima Club. I have a 96 SE that i love to death. It has many and many miles, but still kicks the shat out of pretty much any Honda here in Lincoln, NE. So, like most, my clutch is slipping. I was going to get an ACT, until i read you last comment. I only have Stillen-Hi-Flow, and UR UDP, being installed on Monday. Oh also a B&M short throw. NGK Iridium to boot. What do you think about the Spec Clutch? flashover41@hotmail Thanks- Mike
