took the a/c out!

well last weekend i decided to take out the a/c......it went well and lost quiet a few pounds. Had to get a new belt from napa ( # is 060331 and the messurements are.. 27/32" X 33 3/4" (21 mm X 855 mm)). The car starts up alot quicker now, and the UDP is more effective. so it does help a bit unlike what everyone else was saying that it don't.....so if anyone has any Q's just PM me..

how long did it take you? why do you need a new belt? is there a write up on this? i hardly to never use my a/c......so i might as well lose a few pounds.
how much is a "few" pounds? and are you able to put back in your car when ever you want (i.e. to sell the car)? sorry for all the questions, i'm very interested in doing this.

it took me a good hour to do.....i needed a new belt cause one belt connects to the crank pulley, alternator and the a/c compressor......i think i lost around 60 pounds which includes....the compressor, the condensor, reciever and dryer, and all the houses. You can put it back on ur car when u want to sell it but u will have to get a new reciever and dryer and u will have to charge the system. the reason u have to get a new receiver and dryer is because u have to evacuate it the system to get all the air out and the reciever has to be evacuated the amount of time that it has bin exposed to the air.......so mind as well get a new one. but i noticed a difference and im satisfied....

I took off my system the other day and weighed it on a bathroom scale, 35 lbs. I was expecting a lot more than that but oh well, every little bit helps. This included comp., condenser, drier, hoses (all but the little one that snakes around the driver side of the engine bay), mounting bracket, etc.

I don't care about 35 to 60 pounds of weight and I'd like to keep my AC, but I'm curious how much wasted engine power the AC takes when it's off.

So when the AC system is off, is the mere fact that it's connected to the engine by the belt a significant drag on the engine or not? If it's not significant, then the only drawback to leaving the AC installed is the extra weight, which as I said I don't care about.

Also, removing such a large component which is largely on the passenger side of the car will mess with your car's weight distribution a bit....

yea weight does help alot......i took the a/c out, also the trunk is completely striped, back seats were out and i was on 1/8 tank of gas... and i took on a max with mevi, cai, y pipe, hi flow cat, catback and some other minor things, and all i had was the weight reduction, y pipe, cai, udp. and i took the max by some good 5 to 6 car lenghts....so u can tell how much it does...

well i did notice a slight better performance when i did take off the a/c but im not really worrier about the weight distribution cause there is not that much weight comming off...40 lbs is not going to affect the motor

Well... with most of the weight in our cars being in the front, it'll help with weight distribution. If you do everything possible, including moving the battery to the trunk, we could probably get our cars close to 55/45 distribution

From the official specs for the 1999 (may be slightly different for an earlier 4th gen):

1999 SE curb weight (AT): 3,072 lbs
1999 SE curb weight (MT): 3,014 lbs

1999 SE weight distribution (AT): 63% Front / 37% Rear
1999 SE weight distribution (MT): 62% Front / 38% Rear

Another benefit of having a 5-speed.

I took mine off cause I haven't used it in about 2-3 yrs. It had a slow leak in the system somewhere, so it'd last all summer and be empty after winter was over. I got tired of recharging it and wasn't worried enough about it to get the leak fixed.

I figured if it doesn't work and I'm not willing to get it fixed, why carry it around all the time. The performance gains have been unnoticeable so far. There is A LOT more room under there where the comp. used to sit.
