From another post:
Strut bearings go on the under side of the mount that is on TOP of the strut assembly. I can't really describe there function though. They are prone to failing especially i you take the strut assembly apart. Rather than take a chance I decided to just go ahead and replace them so I don't have to tear the damn car apart if they do go out after I do the shocks/struts!
--------------

Ok, I THINK i know which part they are.. What do they do, how would you test if they fail? Does the rear have strut bearings as well? I've been trying to hunt down this sound i get sometimes on the road.. heh thanks.

No such animal! Strut bearings allow the whole strut assembly turn as a unit. Rear wheels do not turn.

You would either hear them as you turn the wheel back and forth (am not sure of HOW it sounds but it would surely be different). Probably a squeel/grinding/roaring type noise. You would hear it under the hood at the suspected strut mount/tower point. You also would have steering that seems to wander around as you drive (almost as if steering straight cannot be done by holding the wheel in one exact spot). But that,s worse case scenario. Hold your ear to the strut mount and have someone turn your wheel back and forth. If it sounds bad or if you hear a big difference between the two, then somethings wrong in Denmark! Good luck!
