Removed power steering

Just removed my power steering belt. Definitely an increase in the low end according to my butt-dyno. Now gotta decide if the extra power is worth having to muscle the car around low speed turns.

Anyone heard of converting our steering from running off the engine directly to maybe an electric setup?

I can't imagine that the power steering pump requires anything more than 1 or 2 hp especially when the wheels are pointed straight, just look at how wimpy the belt is...corny idea.

you can actually steer without the power steering? my belt broke once and at a stop, my car would click while i turned the wheels and it was not an easy act.

yeah thats not a bright idea, accident waiting to happen...yeah its problaby 1-2 HP, because its hydraulic based, thats where its mechanical efficiency goes up, not worth the power unless you need to work your arms out, in which case go for it

That doesnt sound like too smart of an idea. I have a 74 Toyota Corolla that weighs 2200 pounds and without power steering it feels like I'm driving a semi around corners. Then again there was never power steering available for those years. I would hate to be you driving around the city.

While your at it, disconnect the A/C pump... hell why not disconnect the alternator too for those quick trips to to the corner store.

For the track it'll help to free up those last few HP... but in the street its just not reasonable.
