Key replacement

Hello group, sorry if this was asked before. I need to replace my keys because the second one just broke too. They still work but can't use them on the keychain anymore. Nissan should replace them for free! Dealership wants $50 each! Does anyone know of a better deal? Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

You can probably find a cooler looking Nismo key on ebay for a decent price. Other wise I would just go to like Home depo or someother place that can grind you a key. I'm pretty sure Walmart can do it also. I would rather pay 5 bucks for a key then 50 bucks for a factory style key. Anyhow, look for the Nismo key on ebay. It's really nice looking & you can consider it a OEM part since it's Nismo...

If you get keys made at home depot or whereever, make sure the key works!! Try a couple of times on every lock and make sure it works everytime. I had a spare made ( i forgot where) and i tried it out once after it was made and it worked fine. Now, i have jiggle and turn it a couple times to make it work.

Im pretty sure reputable places like homedepot would make you another for free if the first one doesnt work.

If the key has a chip in it then your screwed. Just pay the fifty bucks & call it a day. But obviously if your key didn't have a chip in it then you could use an outside source to provide you with a new key?

you can get this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=40016

its probably cheaper to get it programmed than getting a new key from the dealership

Thank you for your answers to my question! My key does have a chip. I found out the hard way. I went to Home Depot, got the key made for $2, but when I went to try it nothing happened...only the door would open but the engine would not turn. My problem is not only that I'd have to pay $100 for both keys, but also that it looks like they didn't re design it! They might brake again in no time. The first one lasted about 6 months. Second one 5 years...weird. Has anybody tried drilling a hole somewhere on the key without damaging the key, and then pass a ring thru it? I guess at this point I have very little to lose since a key without a keychain is pretty much a lost key. Thanks again!

yeah, id say to try drilling at least 1 of them... unless the $50 dealer cost transfers the chips of some rip off crap like that.

Last night I seen blank key's for a 1999 Maxima on ebay for $19 + shipping. You should check them out. & they look as though they already have a hole for your key ring.

I think www.redlinemax.com sells chip keys for like half of the price of the dealership. I paid like $65 for my spare key because when I bought my SE-L, it didn't come with another one. It is a chip key and I got it at the dealership. They raped me on that. Check out that site and see if they still have it.

Thanks for that info Bruce. I just called them but they are out of stock for about a month! I'll try drilling and let you know how it goes.

I was able to drill a hole through the metal without any problems, with a very small drill bit. It works great and I don't need to spend $120 on two keys that work fine! Dealer says that I must've been too rough on the keys!
Not sure how to go about uploading the picture so if anyone wants to see it I'll email it to you, or give me advice on how to go about posting it here. Later!

drill the key

I drilled my keys in the very top corners. I used a real small bit I can't remember what size now. I havent had a problem since. Good luck. Center the drill on the crease in the plastic where the 2 diagonal slashes
intersect it. You should be ok. Craig
