Well, the Haynes Manual said something abou the sound of a water pump going out. I dont know for sure what that (H20) sounds like, but maybe that will point you in SOME direction.

My vote goes to the alternator. Does it get louder when your lights are on? (load on the alternator)

Nope it dont get louder with stuff on, plus I did the screwdriver test and the whining is not coming from the alt... I got 2 for waterpump, 1 for belts... Gonna check if the belts are loose later on today...

Also to the guy who liked the corner lights I dunno what they are my friend just gave me them.. The box had chinese letters on it so I dunno lol... They kinda look dumb because the headlights dont match.. lol

My water pump went out about 1.5 months ago, the only reason i knew it was bad was because there was coolant in my driveway everymorning.

Good luck.

For a normal customer at a Stealership for a water pump it runs about $5-600 ,

but since i work for a stealership and get the parts and labor at discounted prices it ran me about 400$

Good luck

I bet its the alternator too because it will make noise when its ready to go. Do you smell something like smoke from an electrical fire? Mine is making noise and I tested it with my stethescope and confirmed it.

Is it normal to open the hood and not hear it as loud as when your standing next to the car? I guess the engine noise kind of went over it because when I open the hood I dont hear it as loud as I hear it standing outside next to the car.

take off the 2 little black covers on your timing chain cover the one towards the back of the motor is for your timing chain tensioner and the other one is for you water pump see if the noise changes when you have them off and also look to ee if there is any coolant on the inside of the cover you could have a bad water pump bearing and it will only leak a little bit inside your t/c cover

Try checking to see if the noise changes with the AC on and off. I don't think it sounds like an alternator, I think it sounds like the AC compressor but you may also want to turn your steering back and forth to see if that changes the sound (PS pump). Good luck

gtr is amazed at the supercharger in my max =\

Anyways, black covers? never seen any gonna have to check tomorrow when theres light....

Also it does change when I turn teh steering, but i figured it changes because when I turn the steering wheel the rpms jump up an down a bit and not because it was the pump...

Same noise here...

I know how annoying that noise is. Mine has been doing it for months as well. Checked belts, nothing loose. Alternator ruled out because there is no power drainage issues and battery never loses charge.

Have noticed small amount of coolant under car at times, but not every day and only on the coldest mornings. Been keeping a close eye on the coolant levels in reservoir and it really doesn't seem to be losing any?

Water pump is also my main concern at the moment as most other obvious causes have been ruled out. But.. uh.. I don't work on the car and my hubby isn't what you'd call mechanically inclined.

The thing that really confuses me.... this noise has been going on for quite some time now. And nothing drastic has happened... how long will these things whine before they go bye-bye??? Hubby seems content to just let it go until the @&#* thing goes completely... in which case, knowing him he'll be hot-rodding around somewhere... wont notice the lights and gauge warnings and end up seizing up the engine.

I hate to say it, but I'm afraid Max's days are numbered folks. I got po'd because he wouldn't get it looked at ("can't afford it") and have switched vehicles. Now driving an 02 Dakota - talk about a switch! His "drive it till the wheels fall off" frame of mind is more aggravating that the whine... and with me having to drive 40 miles a day to work I can't take those kinds of chances.

Miss ya Max 'Ole Buddy

Sounds like a bearing to me. Could be alternator, water pump, or tensioner. My guess its tensioner.

You can pinpoint the source of the noise by removing all your accessory belts. If you still get the noise, then you can suspect the water pump or something else internal to the engine. If the noise goes away, then it is either the power steering pump, alternator or AC compressor. Put the PS belt back on to determine if it is the PS pump or the alt/AC compressor. If the noise comes back only when all the accessory belts are on, then it is the alternator or AC compressor. You can pinpoint which one by using a stethoscope.

To me, it sounds exactly like a power steering pump failure.

I just fixed the timing chain tensionor if thats what you meant, im sort of leaning towards PS pump as well, im gonna try the belt thing first and see whats really going on.

I agree and do the screwdriver test on it, bad waterpump bearing. If not thats one thing eliminated.
