Could this be my 60k mile service? i bought the car a lil over a month ago with about 61,5xx miles. the people i bought it from already moved out of the country, so i cant contact her to fond out if she took it in for the 60k yet. i hope they didnt sell me some junk and then run, i doubt it because the are old grandparents. anyone know?

This has nothing to do with your 60K service.

The Check Engine Light is evidence that something is wrong. That
"something" may be any number of things, some major and some minor. It
might be nothing more than a loose fuel filler cap. The Engine Control
Module (the computer) detected a problem and turned on the Check Engine
Light. At the same time it stored one or more Diagnostic Trouble Codes.
Get someone to do a DTC readout for you. This is not a big deal, does not
require specialized "dealer only" test equipment, and should take less than
an hour. When you know the stored DTCs, you will have a fair idea of what
repairs are needed.

If you like to do your own "wrenching" you can do the DTC readout for yourself.

You will find instructions to do a DTC readout and reset
the Check Engine light at:
http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecu.html

The DTC "translations" are found at:
http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecudecoder.html

Look again. If your Maxima is like mine, the light says Service Engine Soon.

Check Engine Light = Service Engine Soon light = Malfunction Indicator Light.
Three names for the same thing.

right...

servie engine soon. yesterday i was messing around with the little plug on the bottom of the "ram air scoop." im sure it has something to do with that. this morning was the first time i started the car after messing around with it.

i just went to my car and the plug from the "ram air scoop" was loose. i pushed it back in and it clicked. i tried a few times to reset my ECU but failed. it could be something else but not sure what. i dont know why i couldnt reset my ECU but should i be ok? do i need to worry cuz im sure it was just that plug, the only problem is that i cant reset it now.

If you carefully follow the instructions the light will reset.

If it won't reset there may be a second problem which keeps turning the SES light back on.

I don't know. I never had that misfortune. I guess you can turn that screw counterclockwise, forcing it past the stop you already overshot, and hope for the best.
