Just make sure the engine is cool when you do it. One of the engine cleaners/degreasers you can find at any auto parts store will do...I used Simple Green since I had it lying around. I covered my air filter and didn't spray it directly even with it covered. Don't use a power washer as I have heard it is bad to do with electrical parts everywhere and the chances of getting water in there are higher.

What cai do you have?

Just cover it with a towel and don't spray it directly...shouldn't be a problem at all.

If you are wanting to clean the actual cai off after you've cleaned your engine then just use a wet rag.

Use mild degreaser like Simple Green. Stay away from heavy duty type like Engine brite or that purple stuff. Spray and scrub with toothbrush or somesort of brush. Rinse with garden hose and wipe up excess water with a towel. Start up the car and let it warm up.

how dirty is your engine?
most engine degrease will leave stains in your aluminum if your engine is hot. I usually wash my engine once every few months and never had any problems with it.
Here is what I do.
early morning (usually saturday) take my car to the local self car wash. Sine is pretty close to my house the engine doesn't get hot, just warms up a bit.
I rinse it with plain water,
Then I change to the soap power wash, not the brush. and rinse it just a bit more. Then just rinse it again with water. I usually clean it with a wet rag every time so it never really gets dirty.
I wouldn't use degreaser unless is very dirty.

The only reason I suggest engine degreaser is because the people that usually make posts like this haven't ever cleaned their engine and most likely that means their engines are VERY dirty.

*shrug*
