straight through exhaust?

my friend was telling me about exhaust stuff and he said that i should get any good looking one that is straight through. he showed me a pic of one and its a canister and you can see straight though from one end through the other. what is the point of this muffler? is it just for looks or are all mufflers like this?

Most OEM mufflers have twist or extreme baffles in them to muffle the exhaust sound and make new cars silent. Straight through mufflers still have baffles, but they are usually at a minimum, and the straight through design will greatly increase exhaust flow. Keep in mind though, increased exhaust flow does not always = more power, there is such a thing as too much.

That's true. I've got a Magna-Flow straight thru muffler and some times when I drive around town it feels really sluggish cause I've got hardly any back-pressure. It doesn't really feel fast till the RPM's get up around 2500-3000. Then it pulls really good. My fiances car with stock exhaust feels much quicker when you drive around town. Don't forget about an intake though. Gotta let the air get in easier before an exhaust will show it's full potential.
