I got bent over at the dealership today
Haven't owned this car a month...
F*ckin' alternator shorts out (I can only imagine what it looked like under the hood from the noises I heard). Took the battery with it. Had to get all new belts and ****, etc...
I was stopping for gas for the 50+ mile commute home, so I roll up the windows and all hell breaks loose! I'm talking every guage in the car is strobing, the speakers+sub and randomly firing off, the motor is surging, and to top it off it sounded like someone set off a string of black cat firecrackers under the hood. I heard it coming from passeger side and sure enough, that's where my burned up alternator was.
Got a tow truck to come. He just jumped me off and said there's a nissan dealership 2 blocks down the street.
I don't think he appreciated the full effect of driving a maxima with a shorted out alternator and no battery. This B1TCH in the kroger parking lot wouldn't move as I feel the car dying so I lay on the horn til it goes out then give her the finger. Would have cursed her out but my focking windows wouldn't roll down. So that ate up 3 out of
5 minutes this car had to run...
I get out of the parking lot, car sort of stalls out turning left across traffic so I puunch the gass and it takes off hardcore after some kind of backfire.
Shift into first (automatic) to make it up this hill, turn in as soon as I see a nissan sign. Turns out I'm at the used lot and the new service center is another block away.
Put the car in reverse. It dies. Whah whah whah...
So I sprint down there as it's 5 'O clock and all but one tech has left the service bay. He gets the job done in an hour!!!
But charges me $750.
Well, it was either that or walk home 50 miles.
A local 4th gen guy said there is a recall on 97-98 alternators??? Man I would like to get that money back. heh
Oh, found out I have ABS when i was checking fuses.

Go to a local Nissan dealer (a different one) and ask them to check if you qualify for the recall. If you do, go get your money back.
If they don't give you your money back, you can contact Nissan about it; I have the number somewhere, I'll dig it out if you get the shaft.

Please review the disclaimer located at the bottom of this page for more information.
Reason for Recall
On some 1997 and 1998 Nissan Maxima vehicles, there is a possibility that the alternator may contain a damaged diode. This could eventually result in an electrical short which may cause a fire in the alternator that could spread to the engine compartment.
What Nissan Will Do
In order to prevent this condition from occurring, your Nissan dealer will inspect and, if necessary, replace the alternator. This free service should take about two hours to complete, but your Nissan dealer may require your vehicle for a longer period of time based upon their work schedule.
What You Should Do
Contact your Nissan dealer at your earliest convenience in order to arrange an appointment to have your vehicle repaired. Instructions have been sent to your Nissan dealer.
If the dealer fails, or is unable to make the necessary repairs free of charge, you may contact the National Consumer Affairs Office, Nissan North America, Inc. at P.O. Box 191, Gardena, California 90248-0191. The toll free number is 1-800-NISSAN1 (1-800-647-7261).
If you have paid to have your alternator replaced prior to this campaign, you may be eligible for reimbursement of the related expense. You will still need to contact your Nissan dealer to arrange an appointment to have your vehicle inspected.

AFAIK, if it's not covered, they can't 'agree' that it is. Nissan won't pay them if the VIN doesn't match the list of recalls.
^^^^^^^^^ == assumption
Anyone know for sure?
