Problems starting

I have a 98-gxe. when it is cold I have problems starting it. Sometimes it acts like I'm not even getting fuel. When I bought the car it the previous owner had replaced the factory auto trans with a 5-speed. Could this be causing my probs? When it starts it runs fine. I changed the plugs about 7 months ago. The car has about 91000 on it. I have also notice when I'm at a redlight sometimes it is not idling smooth almost sounds like it might die but has not happened yet. any suggestions?

Welcome to Maxima.Org! First I would like for you to take a moment to become familiar with this Sticky ; located above in this forum
Here it is :http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=72447 it will help in the future. No it is not written by God !

You have mentioned that you have changed your spark plugs . What brand did you use? NGK platinums are recomended , but not limited to. When last have you changed the fuel filter? PCV valve? These are some of the components that are recomended for a 60,000 miles tune up . How clean are your battery terminals? Check to see if your alternator was recalled by nissan, with your local nissan dealer. They will replace it for free, if your VIN # falls under the recall.
You should be using 5w-30 engine oil . On very cold days a thicker oil will cause a hard start. If you do not find your answer , someone will try to help you in due time.
Enjoy your stay , and remember there are Jackals in the dark here!

hey, i've been having the SAME problem!! I have a 98 GXE with 95000 miles. I've taken it to the dealer and they've had it for 2 weeks, and they have changed the battery, the starter, crank positioning sensor, and the problem is still not fixed.
The dealer told me they had no idea what the problem was. They said they would have to call Nissan themselves. Nissan told the dealer that the ground from the engine and the transmission was bad. They said they needed to relocate the ground from the engine and transmission and that should fix the problem. But I am attempting to do this myself. If this does not work then I have no clue what the fix is. I will probably have to take it back to the dealer or find a shop.
