crank but no start?

this past weekend I started having problems with my 98 5 speed. The car will crank but it will not start. It finally started one time and blew a puff of smoke out the back. Now its sitting up on jacks since I just finished a clutch install and I cannot get it to start now. When I turn the key is just keeps turning over. Everything feels normal other than the car is not starting. There is a smell of fuel come out of the exhaust pipe. I have checked all of the fuses and they are fine. Does anyone have any clue on this? Thanks.

carson...your car has been sitting for a while hasnt it? check your battery voltage...you may need a little recharge since its been sitting for a little while.

I think the battery is fine, because the starter turns over with no problems....but I can try charging it for a little while. I just doubt it is the battery because I drove to the garage where I was doing my work....then when I got a garage space cleared out I got back in the car and it would not start.
I just went and got some starter fluid, and I am going to try that on my lunch break so I can determine if it is either the fuel or the fire....I am thinking I may have gotten some bad gas, because it eventually did start to get it in the garage, but it did kick out a puff of smoke....I will have more info in a few hours....keep the suggestions coming...thanks.
